The Secret Adventures of Black People

What's in a Dad

Episode Summary

Troy was 43 when he got a birthday letter from a man he'd ever met before, his father, Terry. Over the course of the next 10 years, Troy and Terry talk on and off and things seem to be going well, until they aren’t. Terry writes Troy one last letter before he passes away, a letter that Troy leaves unopened for half a decade. Then one Christmas, his family decides to get together and read the final words of this would-be Dad.

Until then, a Black Adventurer that I know you’ll love is Yamilee Toussaint Beach and her organization, STEM from Dance. On a beach in Greece this dancer engineer gorgeous friend of mine, pitched me the idea of starting this organization called STEM From Dance which would tackle challenges around diversity in the STEM workforce by combining elements of science, technology, engineering, and math with dance. All these years later hundreds of kids have completed her curriculum, she’s hired a staff, and she is doing her thing up in BK. You can find STEM from dance online at www.stemfromdance.
